We often use the past continuous and the past simple in the same sentence.
The action in the past simple is short and usually unexpected. It interrupts the “longer”
action which is usually in a past continuous form.
For example:

We jumped into a car that was waiting for the bus stop
I was watching TV " w h i l e " my wife was sleeping.
When we have a sentence in past simple and another in past continuous we often use when and while, but we have to take into consideration the following rules.

In a story, we use the past simple to talk about past events in chronological order; i.e. the main events of a story.
We also use the past simple to talk about past habits or past states.
We use the past continuous the set the scene in a story.
We use the past continuous for actions in progress in the past or longer actions interrupted by shorter actions in past simple.
We use the past continuous to talk about actions that were in progress (not finished) at a specific moment in the past.
The specific moment in the past can be described by a time expression (at 9 a.m., at midday, at lunchtime, all morning, all day, etc.):
Or by a simple past sentence:
We often use the past continuous at the beginning of a story to describe the situation.

Introduction week for (5th Semester) students.
